COED | EDNA Workshop: Setting boundaries as an educational developer: Your wellbeing matters
Friday, October 18, 2024, 12:30 to 2:30 pm ET, online via Zoom
Facilitated by Christopher Laursen (COED) & Cosette Lemelin (EDNA, Educational Developers Network of Alberta)
As an ED, burnout is an occupational hazard due to the relational, dynamic, and complex circumstances of our roles, including the precarious nature of our employment.
Boundaries are the line, the periphery, the edges between what is possible and reasonable for each of us and what is not. What works for one person may not work for another, nevertheless, skillful boundaries can keep each of us healthy and comfortable as a distinct person in a helping profession.
This workshop is a unique opportunity for EDs in Ontario and Alberta to engage in cross-country peer support in identifying boundary pinch-points, i.e. the moments that test your ability to set boundaries. This synchronous online workshop will not be recorded. Participants will have both anonymous and optional opportunities to share experiences, and to discuss strategies to set boundaries to protect our health and wellbeing in our ED roles.
This workshop will challenge you to identify your boundary-setting pinch points as an Educational Developer. For instance, have you ever:
- Overcommitted to or been assigned to too many people or projects at once?
- Taken on or appointed to tasks where you lack the skills or knowledge to complete—spending hours researching and reading in an attempt to “get up to speed” or stay “one step ahead”?
- Done the work for an instructor rather than coaching, guiding, or mentoring the instructor?
- Absorbed the emotions of others or taken on the instructor’s teaching challenge as if it were your own?
- Been placed in situations where your perception of autonomy is reduced or removed?
- Other ideas?

About
As Ontario educational and curriculum developers, we are navigating many challenges. GenAI is coming into higher ed at a time of institutional austerity measures due to the Ontario provincial government cutbacks in funding and a tuition freeze that began in 2019 and will continue for at least another three years during a moment of significant inflation. With this comes the precarity of employment in our field and larger enrollments. How do we take care of ourselves, meet the needs of our institution, manage emotional labour, and move forward with our missions to enhance pedagogies (particularly inclusive pedagogies)?
Join Ontario educational and curriculum developers and our plenary speaker, Dr. Maha Bali, at the COED Fall Meeting 2024 to reflect, discuss, and collaborate about our challenges, opportunities, and strategies for continuing our work in higher education.
Plenary: “Nurturing Socially Just Care and Wellbeing in the Age of Generative AI” with Dr. Maha Bali
In this session, we will discuss the impact of “shocks” like Generative AI and the pandemic on the work of educators and educational developers. How can we center socially just care and wellbeing in our communities in order to respond? How can we continually intentionally adapt without losing sight of our larger goals and core values? This will be an interactive session where audience members can reflect on their challenges and their good practices. We will also discuss approaches to supporting communities in times of uncertainty, including open and connected ways of promoting critical AI literacy.
Maha Bali is Professor of Practice at the Center for Learning and Teaching at the American University in Cairo. She has a PhD in Education from the University of Sheffield, UK. She is co-founder of virtuallyconnecting.org (a grassroots movement that challenges academic gatekeeping at conferences) and co-facilitator of Equity Unbound (an equity-focused, open, connected intercultural learning curriculum, which has also branched into academic community activities Continuity with Care, Socially Just Academia, a collaboration with OneHE: Community-building Resources and MYFest, an innovative 3-month professional learning journey. She writes and speaks frequently about social justice, critical pedagogy, and open and online education. She blogs regularly at https://blog.mahabali.me and tweets @bali_maha.
